Capital Football National Premier League Champions, O’Connor Knights, will face the might of A-League giants Macarthur FC at Canberra’s iconic GIO Stadium on Tuesday 30 July.
The Knights have secured the national capital’s premium venue for the highly-anticipated Cup clash and will become the first NPL side to meet A-League opposition in the cup at the venue.
“We are delighted that we were able to come to an agreement with GIO Stadium to use the facilities for our cup match.” Stipe Radic, President of the O’Connor Knights commented about the announcement.
“With our home venue of O’Connor Enclosed unsuitable for the match, and a lack of viable options that were large enough to accommodate the crowd we are expecting in the area, we had to think creatively.
“GIO Stadium is the perfect venue for a match of this magnitude. We are now calling on all football fans in the Capital to get out to the Stadium and get behind the match. We are excited about it, and it should be an amazing occasion.”
GIO is no stranger to the round-ball code having hosted pre-season A-League games in the past, a brace of Canberra United Women’s A-League games and the fondly remembered 2015 AFC Asian Cup which saw packed stands roaring on the competing teams.
“The opportunity to play at GIO Stadium is fantastic,” O’Connor Knights Technical Director, Aleks Trninic said.
“We are guaranteed to get an amazing playing surface, the pitch is regularly named as one of the best in the country for sporting events, and the additional facilities at the ground means we can attract a large crowd.”
