Canberra United Academy (CUA) goalkeeper Isobel Davy has been named in the Westfield Young Matildas 24-player squad, set to assemble for a training camp in Sydney in early October.
Davy’s selection comes after a strong showing for ACT at the recent National Talent Challenge (NTC) competition, as well as a standout season for CUA in the Women’s National Premier League.
CUA Technical Director Scott O’Donell says Davy’s selection is a reward for the hard work she has put in over the past few seasons.
“I am really happy for Isobel, knowing how much work she has put into her game,” O’Donell said.
“She is always striving to improve her goalkeeping skills and her reading of the game and also has an excellent attitude.
“She is setting a great example for all of the keepers in the CUA program, and I wish her all the best for the upcoming Young Matildas camp.”
The Sydney training camp will be one of three camps held by the Young Matildas, as preparations continue to ramp up ahead of the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in Chonburi, Thailand.
Young Matildas Head Coach Leah Blayney says she is excited to start working with the squad ahead of the upcoming championship.
“I am looking forward to getting this group of players into camp in early October as we ramp up preparations for the forthcoming AFC U-19 Women’s Championship,” Blayney said.
“While I’m fortunate to work with many players in the squad with the Future Matildas program in Sydney, there are numerous players who will be joining us from other clubs and programs, so I am excited to see how all the players and staff gel together.”
The Young Matildas will travel to Thailand on Monday, 21st October, and will spend a week acclimatising in Chonburi before their tournament kicks-off on Sunday, 27th October.
Australia will face DPR Korea in their opening game, before taking on Thailand and Vietnam in their other pool matches.
A top three-finish for the Young Matildas will secure them a place at the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, in one of Asia’s three allocated qualification spots.
