Over fifty teams from Gungahlin United will show their support for the annual #PlayinPurple campaign this season when they don purple socks for on the weekend of the 30th and 31st July.
In total the Gunners will have around 580 players from 61 different teams across the age spectrum, ranging from under-5 to first grade, will take part in the national awareness campaign for pancreatic cancer.
The cause is very close to the heart of the club as Gungahlin United Registrar, Sharon Brennan explained.
The campaign is something that not only raises money for this wonderful cause but makes more people aware of this terrible disease that affects so many people,” Brennan said.
“Gungahlin United is a community club and as such is committed to supporting causes such as this. I, myself lost a dearly love uncle and one of my best friends lost her mother to pancreatic cancer in a six-month period.
“I started supporting PanKind by participating in their Remember September fundraiser last year and when it came time for the Play in Purple fundraiser I approached our Club Executive who gave an immediate ‘let’s do it’.”
The process is also an educational tool for the younger members of the Gungahlin Unitec community and one which has been wholeheartedly embraced by the entire organisation.
“The teams are already aware of what the fundraiser does and why they are wearing purple socks,” Brennan revealed. “We provided that information on the order sheets that we sent out to teams and in our Facebook posts promoting the event.
“This is an extremely important promotional campaign. Not only does it give out players an opportunity the help raise money for this very important research, but it also raises awareness of pancreatic cancer amongst players and parents.”
Gungahlin aren’t the only team who are getting behind this cause as the four teams from Weston Molonglo FC in Men’s League Masters Over-35 competitions and Majura FC will also be wearing purple socks for the two rounds of Play in Purple (24 July and 31 July).
Keep an eye out on the fields of Canberra this July and show your support for the #PlayinPurple cause.
