A goal three minutes from time from Jamie Ward earned Brindabella Blues a vital 1-1 draw against ANU FC in a match that was switched to Woden Park due to the University fields being deemed unplayable.
Ward’s goal, his second of the Capital Premier League season, may yet prove crucial for a number of clubs who are chasing down ANU, currently occupying the fourth, and final, place in the end of season jamboree.
Earlier, Chase Deans’ first goal of the season had put ANU ahead after only a quarter of an hour, but Ward was on target in the 87th minute to ensure that the points were shared come the full-time whistle. ANU remain four points clear of Brindabella who stay sixth at the end of Round 13.
Belconnen United ended the weekend only one point out of the top four after they swept aside White Eagles, claiming a 3-0 victory at McKellar Park to perhaps reignite their hopes of a place in the Finals.
New signing Tim Nguyen struck first for the Blue Devils, firing the hosts in front after only seven minutes, a lead that was important in that it meant that the Eagles were left to chase the game and, subsequently, left themselves exposed to more pain.
That was implemented by Hayden Tunney, the Belconnen youngster scoring either side of the half-time break to move onto four goals for the campaign. Eagles’ afternoon soured further when Steven Kreskas was sent off only seconds after coming on as a substitute in the second-half.
Yoogali SC moved ten points clear at the top of the table, having played a game more, as they cruised to a 5-0 victory over Canberra Juventus at Solar Mad Stadium in Griffith. The hosts were in great form but had to wait until late in the contest to ice the cake with a brace of goals coming in the final nine minutes.
Joe Preece opened the scoring after quarter of an hour, before Joshua De Rossi made it two-nil, seven minutes before the half-time break. Both would add to their tally in the second-half, moving to eight and ten goals for the season respectively.
Darren Bailey added the fourth, his twelfth of the season, a goal that gave him a joint leadership of the Golden Boot race, but more importantly, his team have taken another giant stride towards promotion to the NPL.
The match between Wagga City Wanderers and Queanbeyan City was postponed due to unplayable pitches in Wagga.
