Thirty-three young referees have been selected to join the Capital Football Referee Cadet and Academy Program for 2018.
The Capital Football Referee Cadet and Academy Program has been developed by the Referee Technical Committee (RTC) to identify and develop young referees who have the potential to referee at the elite level.
The program acts as a pathway for referees to progress from junior football through to senior football and potentially even national and international football.
Over the last ten years the majority of Capital Football Referees who have gone on to referee on the A-League and W-League have come through this program.
As a member of the Cadet and Academy Program, referees will be involved in:
- Refereeing in the Junior NPL competitions throughout the winter season
- Education sessions held every four to six weeks covering topics such as foul identification,
- offside, positioning, psychology etc
- Training sessions with the broader Capital Football Referee membership
- Mentoring with senior referees
Newly-appointed FIFA Assistant Referee Owen Goldrick and W-League Assistant Referee Nia Southwell will oversee the 2018 Cadet and Academy Referee program.
Goldrick said that the Academy is a great way for young referees to begin their career progression.
“The Academy is designed to provide a pathway from juniors in Canberra, through to the elite level of football.”
“This program provides high level coaching in all aspects of refereeing that will improve the skills of referees in the program and enable them to officiate at a higher level.”
