From Belsouth FC
Belsouth Football Club is turning pink this Saturday 23 June for an important cause – raising money to support Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) deliver their vision of a better journey for all Australians affected by breast cancer.
Over 900 players will be wearing bright pink shorts this weekend at the Belsouth Pink Sports Day. You will be able to spot them at football fields all over Canberra. At the home field in Murranji Street Hawker, a day of pink based activities have been planned to bring Belsouth and its community closer together.
At last year’s Pink Sports Day the Belsouth community raised over $6000 and received recognition from BCNA as a major supporter. This year, Belsouth hopes to go one better and raise over $10,000.
Belsouth has over 900 players and over 70 teams in 2018, ranging from the 5 year old Miniroo ‘Peewees’ to adult men’s and women’s teams.
Local businesses at Jamison Plaza and Cook Shops have generously pledged to support the fundraising efforts through steps such as donating a proportion of their profits, or getting involved by selling pink bracelets and spraying players’ hair pink for a small donation. These centres are also “pinking up” during this week (18 to 23 June).
Belsouth President Andrew Higginson said that he is proud to be part of a club with such a strong community spirit. “We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, so at our annual Pink Sports Day it’s wonderful to see Belsouth players, parents, supporters and sponsors working together to support this important cause. BCNA have also sent their 5 metre tall Pink Lady (Veronica) to Canberra which will look amazing at the grounds on Saturday”.
In 2018 this annual Belsouth event coincides with the 20th Anniversary of BCNA, and with the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The excitement of the World Cup and Belsouth players’ enthusiasm for the Socceroos will help make this Pink Sports Day bigger and better than ever.
