There are many great benefits to becoming a football referee whether you still play the game, have retired, or have never played there is plenty to be gained from picking up the whistle.
Throughout Canberra and the region football is played at every level, so whether you want to referee at your local junior club or make it to the world stage like Canberra's own Ben Williams, Ben Wilson and Allyson Flynn there are matches to suit your level and experience. Football refereeing is a great way to stay involved in the game as well as having some fun, making new friends and earn some money along the way.
In 2016 there will be Game Leader courses delivered which has been specifically designed for referees aged 13 and 14 who want to referee miniroos.
Game Leader (GL)
This is course has been specifically designed for new junior referees aged 13 and 14 and replaces the Instructing Referee course. At the completion of this course you will be able to referee miniroos games from under 6 to under 11.
This is a practical course taking 2 hours.
Cost $85 includes course fees, an instructing referee uniform, a Fox40 Whistle, and registration as a Capital Football Referee.
Becoming an GL is the first step in referee pathway. It is great way to be involved in community football, develop leadership skills, improve confidence, develop communication skills and earn some money.

Level 4 Referee (L4)
This course is designed for new referees of all ages who want to referee junior football (It is recommended for new referees aged 15 years and above). At the completion of this course you will be able to referee 11 v 11 matches
Level 4 Courses are the beginners courses for refereeing full field games. Courses are run over a full day of classroom work and a self-guided online Laws of the Game module beforehand. On the Wednesday night following the course there is a practical training session. This will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.
Cost $110 includes course fees, 2016 Law Book, Fox 40 whistle and registration as a Capital Football Referee.
The Level 4 referee course is accredited by FFA. It is great way to be involved in community football, develop leadership skills, improve confidence, develop communication skills and earn some money. The Level 4 Referee qualification provides the pathway to senior and elite refereeing. You will need to complete the FFA Laws of the Game online here before you can undertake the course.

Level 3 - Skill Consolidation, one day course, exams, two feedback games(16 year-old +) (minimum requirement for National Youth League AR, W-League AR)
Level 2 Theory - Development of Advanced Officiating, one day course, three exams, (18 year-old+)(minimum requirement for W-League Referee, Youth League Referee)
Level 2 - Three assessment games
Level 1 Theory - Senior Officiating, Committment to Excellence, course, three exams, mentoring of junior referees (minimum for A-League AR, FIFA AR)
Level 1 - Two assessment games, fitness requirements (A-League Referee, FIFA Referee)
